Harvey W. Woodward

NOTTINGHAM - Harvey W. Woodward, 66, of Stage Road, Nottingham, NH passed away November 5th due to a tragic work accident.  Harvey was born in Rochester, NH on May 9th, 1952, the youngest child of Bill and Edna Harvey Woodward.  His grandfather taught forestry at UNH for many years. He grew up on the Woodward Farm in Durham with his sisters Margaret and Jean. At a young age, Harvey was active in trapping for fur, pressing apples for cider and making maple syrup.  He graduated from Oyster River High School with the class of 1970, then received his Associate’s Degree in forestry from the Thompson School at UNH in 1972. His father gave him his first skidder, and he began his career in logging, which became Woodward Timber, Inc.

Harvey was on the board of directors, the executive committee and leadership team of the NH Timberland Owners Association.  He received the Outstanding Forest Products Trucker award in 2006, and the NH Outstanding Logger of the Year Award in 1993. He was a founding member of the Timber Harvesting Council and a member of the Rockingham County Woodland Owners Association. He served on the NHTOA policy committee from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, and on the UNH Cooperative Extension’s Forest Industry Committee in the 1980s.

In his own quiet way Harvey worked hard to give logging a good name. “Lumber is a really wonderful product because it’s renewable,” he said. “Trees grow while you sleep.”  Harvey enjoyed fly fishing and spending time at Laurie’s family cottage up north. People remember Harvey as a true gentleman, a man of unconditional kindness, and a great friend.

Harvey met his wife Laurie Legard at The Stone Church in Newmarket, NH where they loved to listen to music and dance.  They married in August of 1990 at the house Harvey built in Nottingham. In addition to Laurie he leaves behind his son Karl Harvey Woodward, his daughter Reta Stebbins, her husband Mike and their six month old son Grayson.  Also, sisters Margaret Redhouse and Jean Sawtell. Sisters-in-law Cathy, Rachel and Susie. Brothers-in-law Carter, Sarge and Todd. In-laws Jane and Sarge Legard. Uncle Dan Harvey and Aunt Aggie Wilkos. And many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt Louise Harvey and his brother-in-law Daniel Redhouse, Jr.

In memory of Harvey, loan a book to a friend, lend a helping hand, or enjoy a walk in the woods.
