Peter Carl Andersen

DURHAM - Peter Carl Andersen, age 58, died after a yearlong battle with cancer, surrounded by family on December 3, 2021, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Peter was known for his outgoing, warm-hearted, and generous nature. Peter was a dreamer. To him, nothing was impossible. As a young man he excelled in running, finishing among the top 100 in the 1986 Boston Marathon. He represented the United States twice in the Orienteering World Championships in Europe. As a lark he once raced the steam-driven Mount Washington cog railway train up the mountain... and won! His spirit was indomitable, and he was full of life.

Peter and his wife founded and co-owned Lighthouse Construction, helping people create beautiful spaces around them. He was a true artist.

He and Martha have hosted Friday Friends for over 12 years. They’ve guided dozens of young people through adolescence in a passionate, loving, generous household.

He grew up in Durham and graduated from Oyster River High School and the University of New Hampshire with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was an ever-present force in Durham throughout his life.

Peter was predeceased by his mother, Barbara Andersen, and is survived by his father, Kenneth Andersen, of Durham. Peter is also survived by his wife of 24 years, Martha, and their children, Anton and Patricia, all of Durham; his son Ian and grandson, Brian, of Manchester, MA; his brother, David Andersen, and sister-in-law, Susan Murray, of Gainesville, Florida; his sister, Joyce Andersen, and brother-in-law, Harvey Reid, and nephews, Otto and Levi of York, Maine; a dear uncle and aunt Einer and Kirsten Andersen of Allentown, PA; three dear cousins, Dane Andersen of Brentwood, TN, Erik Andersen of Munster, IN, and Paul Riggs of Crystal, MN, and numerous relatives in Denmark.
